The Philippian church, unlike some of the others of the New Testament, was not plagued by doctrinal controversy. The letter to the Philippians is one of expressions of love and appreciation by Paul probably written from a Roman prison. He gave instruction about the person of Christ, the nature of Christian joy, the process of sanctification, the sufficiency of grace, and the redemptive value of suffering. He admonished the church that whatever suffering they might endure would be worth it because of the promise of eternal life.
